There’s some unsaid appeal about the way today’s phones can shift from foldable all-screen devices (we’re looking at you, Samsung Galaxy Fold) one moment to sleek and completely glass covered in the next. And the idea of a port-free smartphone is definitely near the top of the list.

A Port-free Smartphone Design
Let’s start off by saying that wires can be quite pesky. Some people like; some people don’t. After all, who fancies the thought of wires snagging on every surface when you’re exercising, or getting off of a chair at a resto, or when you’re just doing work in general.
The smartphone company, Vivo, is determined to put an end to this trivial yet relatable problem it seems.
Introducing, the Vivo Apex 2019
Chinese electronics company Vivo is giving everyone a glimpse of their unibody smartphone. Their main selling point? A streamline between aesthetics and functionality. Ergo, we have the disappearance of button, ports, and speaker grills. It’s wrapped in a single piece of glass too.
Vivo’s launch event in Hong Kong this week flaunted their unibody prototype with its “Waterdrop Glass.” The use of glass for a front and back cover in contemporary smartphones aren’t groundbreakingly new.
But the edge lies in Vivo developing new technologies to completely eliminate the typical openings present in most smartphones — like the bezels, the seams, the frame around the screen, the portholes, etc.
Some Specifications We Ought to Know
In place of physical buttons, the Vivo Apex 2019 makes use of a combination between pressure-sensing and capacitive touch. You can wake up the phone, put it to sleep, or change the volume when you press on the sides of the glass where the bezel would usually be.
In addition, the glass around the phone itself is the speaker. It vibrates to produce sound, and eliminates the need for a speaker grill entirely.
The entire screen is also embedded with fingerprint scanners — letting users unlock the phone via natural touch in any part of the display, as well as open an app with one simple pres. This port-free smartphone also comes with a Fingerprint Light function that lights up nearby pixels when the fingers are close by. This additional light also aids in accurate fingerprint reading.
Ambitions are high for Vivo as the electronic company aims to develop a port-free smartphone that makes use of magnets (their own connector called the MagPort) to charge the phone and transfer data.
But what’s the real tea?
For those of you who are currently reading this, and for some reason, are spazzing out, I’m sure the next big question is:
When are we going to see it the store shelves?
Well, Vivo has no plans to push this particular model out into the market. Shall I cue the sound of disappointed instant fans? At the moment, it doesn’t look like it’s a viable option for Vivo. Nevertheless, the very idea of an all-glass and port-free smartphone is pretty cool.
“With the goal of enhanced usability and simplicity at the core, APEX 2019 offers consumers a glimpse into the future of smartphone design and development.”
~ Vivo senior vice-president Spark Ni.
Still, there’s no denying that’s a pretty ingenious concept phone to have. But who knows? Perhaps one day we’ll see this pretty port-free smartphone design on store shelves.
