Excellent Dark Layouts for Your Next Web Design Project

Let’s begin with the symbolism of the black color. What does this color represents and how does it help better convey your message for a particular target audience?

Black has several meanings and representations. In business, it has qualities and mood that serves psychologically by engaging a certain individual. But other than that, black means authority, power and control. It could be intimidating for some, but great web designers see it as sophisticated, dignified and serious. It magnifies confidence for others.

Studies show that black is a color most favored by the youth market, ages from 16 to 25. They are those who are currently understanding their own sense of identity and place in this world. Black boards with printed jewel colors, such as red, magenta, emerald green, or bright blue, or gold, silver or white, will produce a dramatic impression.

Right Practices in Creating Dark Layouts

Great as black color may seem, not all black designs are produced well enough to achieve the desired result for a business. Particularly in web designing, there are certain practices that should be understood by every web designer in order to avoid common mistakes that can turn off viewers, leading to a tantamount of bounce rate.

Dark Design Means Less Readability

Take note that with dark web design, there is less appeal for most readers and less opportunity for conventional design elements. When it comes to readability, light designs becomes more appropriate as words are easier to understand through a white layout. According to experts; “Most people don’t like viewing light text against a dark background on websites because it strains their eyes, making for a much less enjoyable experience.”

Dark Dasigns Have a Tendency to Appeal Heavy

Dark designs are easy to clutter which can result to a heavy feeling. But all it takes is a proper use of the white space to render great effect. The design can use the white space to outline certain elements. But this should be done very efficiently, unless the result will be in a total opposite of what is being desired.

White Space Should Be Increased for Readability

It’s been mentioned that dark designs aren’t ideal for reading so how would a designer include a certain amount of texts that are needed in the page? The trick is simple: Increase the white space by adjusting paragraph size, kerning and leading. It’s just a matter of spacing between and around characters that makes in comparing dark and light layouts. One can also increase the font size as it could mean more white space.

Perfect Balance through Proper Contrast

Dark designs often cause eye-strain. Too much and too little would be harmful for conveying the right business message. But this can be very simple if the designer considers balancing the darkness of the background with the lightness of the text. You may experiment black color’s characteristics. You’ll notice that once you let the background get lighter, the text follows. The design becomes unpleasant to the eyes. Try it with other shades and see the difference.
