5 Foldable Smartphones Coming Very Soon

I can now see what 2019 is going to be. It’s the year of foldable smartphones!

Since the start of the year (and even late into 2018), speculations about all-screen phones being folded thousands of times have already risen. The speculations and the endless leaks have come to an end, and now the techs are in our presence.

Keep an eye out for these 5 brands that are coming out with foldable smartphones sometime soon or late into 2019.

#1 Samsung Galaxy Fold

Samsung made headlines when it unveiled its foldable all-screen smartphone last week, February 20. Officially named as the Samsung Galaxy Fold, one of the world’s first foldable smartphones have come out with phone specs that have deviated from the smartphone norm. (Honestly, what else could you expect?)

Six cameras, two batteries, a heavy internal storage, a competitive RAM memory, and multi-tasking window are just a few of the many new features that fans of the Samsung brand would drool over. The Samsung Galaxy Fold is set to hit the shelves around April 2019 and will retail for the price $1,980.

#2 Huawei Mate X

Unveiled in MWC 2019, Huawei unveiled their very own contribution to foldable smartphones: the Huawei Mate X. What’s the contrast to Samsung’s Galaxy Fold, you ask? Huawei Mate X’s foldable screen wraps outward, where as the Galaxy Fold folds in.

Unfolding the device gives you an 8-inch display with three screens. When it’s shut, you have screens on both sides as well as a grip that holds the smartphone cameras. An interesting design note pointed out by the developers and many tech enthusiasts is that the phone was made for one-handed use.

In terms of the internal hardware, the Huawei Mate X is loaded with the Kirin 980 CPU — the flagship processing that gave the Huawei Mate X its title as the “world’s fastest 5G phone.”

Moreover, the Huawei Mate X is also much thinner than you’d expect, and comes with 4,500mAh battery that’s split between two cell banks — much like Samsung. The Huawei Mate X is set to retail around the summer of 2019 at around $2,624.

#3 Xiaomi MIX FLEX

The Xiaomi MIX Flex was one of the more recent foldable smartphones that came out with a teaser reveal. We saw a video of it on Twitter by renowned tech leaker, Evan Blass. And Xiaomi’s official teaser matched the previous video.

Xiaomi’s foldable handset is initially shown as a tablet mode, and both sides of the device are folded inwards on either side. This leaves the middle-third of the phone on show. And based off of what we can see, it’s plainly obvious that the design is different from the other foldable smartphones that have been unveiled.

It’s not officially released or made, but its creation has been confirmed and its final concept is in the works. Company president, Lin Bin had this to say:

“Xiaomi double folding mobile phone is coming! This symmetrical double-folded form perfectly combines the experience of the tablet and mobile phone, which is both practical and beautiful.

“Although it is still an engineering machine, it is sent out for everyone to see. If you like it, we will consider making a mass production machine in the future.

“In addition, we want to give this engineering machine a name, what do you think is good? I think of two: Xiaomi Dual Flex, Xiaomi MIX Flex.”

#4 Motorola Razr 2019

Let’s take a short trip down memory lane and take a moment to remember the old marvel that was the Motorola Razr. Remember how savvy you felt flipping that phone open and close while pretending to be James Bond?

Well, you don’t only get to relive that now. The Motorola Razr is coming back in its brand new version. And personally, I think it’s going to truly embody what it couldn’t back then.

What makes this so noteworthy is that it’s going to keep the iconic Motorola Razr branding. The concept is a flip phone that opens up into a full foldable screen.

Oddly enough, rumors of this re-realization has been circulating the tech universe for a good while now — since 2017 to be exact, and pretty much everything about its official design is still under the shadow of speculation, but trust us when we say that it won’t be very long now.

#5 Apple’s iPhone X Fold

No, it doesn’t have an official name yet. But are you honestly surprised that Apple has come out with an announcement that promises a brand new innovative spin to the rising trend that is foldable smartphones?

Following the launch of the foldable smartphones by both Samsung and Huawei, Apple has also recently come out with ambitious plans for the new iPhone. And earlier this week, Apple revealed the patents covering plans for creating the brand’s first ever foldable iPhone.

Furthermore, Dutch industrial designer Roy Gilsing sees it fit to note that he’s after a transformative design for the device. A laptop-style keyboard integration is part of the plan.

Well, this certainly looks interesting…

Other Brands Coming Out with Foldable Smartphones

And since 2019 is officially the year of the foldable smartphones, it’s dandy to note that not only these five smartphone brands are bidding for the top spot in consumers’ hearts (and pockets). There are others; some with prototypes, others with concepts, but they all say they have plans to create their own foldable smartphones.

Other brands who are speculated to release foldable smartphones of their own include:

  • Oppo foldable phone: The prototype was revealed during the MWC 2019, and it actually looks a lot like the Huawei Mate X.
  • LG Bendi: In recent months, LG confirmed that it’s working on foldable phones as well, and they have filed patents for it. Names like Flex, Duplex, and Foldi have been mentioned in some of LG’s internal documents.
  • ZTE: ZTE has filed patents for a phone that folds in in itself with a wrap-around display.

My Final Thoughts on the Foldable Smartphones

Aside from being obviously a technological marvel, perhaps I’m not the first to admit that this new foldable smartphones trend is actually a breath of fresh air. Apart from giving us a reasonable excuse for all the prices on smartphones stacking up, we now have new possibilities (as far as portability goes) to look forward to.

As I’ve been saying since the beginning of this article, foldable smartphones are all set to take over the smartphone world this year.

Are you all set for the new smartphone norm?
