Assassin’s Creed Odyssey: Fastest Launch-selling Record for Ubisoft
Ubisoft found itself swimming in successful profits during the first week of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Since its launch, everything’s doing good so far for the game’s developers. Ubisoft has announced that the game’s actual sales have resulted in the best launch week performance for an Assassin’s Creed franchise. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey garnered positive responses from both fans and critics, as well.
Is anyone surprised? We certainly are — and pleasantly so.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey: Early Skepticism
At the initial announcement of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s creation, fans and critics alike were skeptical. Why would the developers suddenly deviate from the realism platform this game was initially known for? Why would they choose to take the course of mysticism?
The title of Ubisoft’s newest franchise conjures up God of War vibes. Its choice of setting in the mythological story of the Odyssey in Ancient Greece certainly cements that.
Assassin’s Creed was a game known for creating its fictional mark on the famous historical stories of the world. It has its own take on the American Revolutionary War (Assassin’s Creed III). And then the game went on to portray the 18th-century Industrial Revolution in England (Assassin’s Creed Syndicate).
Veering completely off of the usual path in pursuit for a more fantastical approach had people scratching their heads. But since its launch last week, it looks like the gaming market is appreciative of the franchise’s fantastical twist. Who would’ve thought?
Odyssey’s Breaking Record
Ubisoft didn’t give exact sales numbers, but the company did note that the game performed well within its first week. For this reason, it outshined its predecessors — Origins, Syndicate, and Unity in terms of launch sales. (Whether it has beat sales numbers from previous entries like Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is yet to be seen.)
In a press release as part of the announcement, Geoffroy Sardin — Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing had this to say:
“We are incredibly proud of what the team accomplished with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and humbled by the amazing reception from critics and players. Based on the quality of the game and the very encouraging reactions from players, we expect Odyssey to be one of the top performing Assassin’s Creed games of all-time.
The launch is just the start of this epic journey. We have robust content plans for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey that will keep players engaged and exploring the game’s beautiful and compelling world for a long time to come.”
Our Final Words
Well, based on that press release, Ubisoft certainly sets the bar high for the entire Assassin’s Creed franchise. The game series had its own fair share of ups and downs with previous releases. Unity, Rogue, Syndicate, Origins, Black Flag, and Brotherhood; just a few of the many. But it seems Ubisoft has grand plans for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.
It’s off to a great start. Now it’s up to the game’s developers to keep that momentum enduring, and our fingers are crossed for awesome AC DLCs yet to come.
Then I guess we can take this to mean that Ubisoft is looking to lean even further into RPG stuff for future games.
