3 Gore Anime to Rewatch This October

Nobody quite understands why some people like watching gore anime, or why its creators produced it in the first place. Is it a deeper and darker expression of art? Maybe it’s just a realistic depiction of what actually would have happened if it took place in the real world — as gruesome as it is — like Berserk. Or perhaps it’s part of everybody’s morbid fascination for the grotesque.

Whatever the reason, the fact remains that gore anime exists, and there are people who like to watch it. So brace yourselves for the bloodiest discussion we’ve hosted in this site so far.

It’s going to be dismembered body parts and rivers of blood from this point on, so it’s best to click away now if you find the subject matter triggering or if you don’t fancy the idea of having to read through human beings — albeit fictional anime characters — being ruthlessly violated for morbid entertainment

Let’s jump into the red!

#3 Attack on Titan

100 years ago, natural predators of humanity appeared. These were the Titans, giant humanoid mindless monsters with grotesque body parts. And their sole purpose for existing is to devour humans. The chasmic gap that existed between the two races was so great that humanity was rapidly exterminated and easily faced the brink of extinction.

“That day, the human race remembered the terror of being dominated by them, and the shame of being held captive in a birdcage…”

When the mammoth walls that separate the city of humans from the land of the Titans come crumbling down, the human race is prey to the giants once more.

Don’t let the bloodbath deter you, however. Despite the bloody human versus Titan fights, you’re totally in for some awesome storytelling. Attack on Titan made its mark on anime history for a reason. The compelling story of the struggle between man and monster is what drew millions of fans to keep watching the series and eagerly wait for the seasons that will follow.

#2 When They Cry

June 1983 in a rural village called Hinamizawa, the main character Keiichi Maebara moves to the secluded village and befriends his new classmates Rena Ryugu, Mion Sonozak, Rika Furude, and Satoko Hojo. It was normal school activities one moment and quickly morphed into a chaotic bloodbath after the Watanagashi Festival.

A series of annual murders makes itself known, and Keiichi becomes absorbed into it. In each story arc, he or one of his friends become paranoid. A crime is committed soon after involving the murder of one of their own friends.

It’s one cruel murder after another, unfolding into a story that’s bizarre, but strangely makes so much sense — within the context of the anime’s story arc, of course.

#1 Corpse Party: Tortured Souls

“Evil never dies… It just waits for a new semester to begin.”

You’d think that after the number of horror movies that exist in the world, people know better than to try to erase memories and build new ones. Gruesome history always manages to unearth itself and torture the next generation.

That’s exactly what happened to the unhallowed grounds of Heavenly Host School. In an attempt to erase the gruesome and shocking history of the entire school, it was razed to the ground. Unfortunately, a new high school — the Kisaragi Academy — was built in Heavenly Host’s place.

And well, you know what they say. All true evil needs is a proper invitation. And that’s exactly what happened when a group of students accidentally released the nightmarish evil once again. And now, undead horrors stalk the bloodstained halls of the academy.

It’s a rollercoaster of torture, murder, and insanity. If horribly brutal movies are what you’re after, then this is the OVA just for you.

What We Think of Gore Anime

Anime is notorious for blowing situations out of proportion — especially when it comes to more complex plots. Nevertheless, not all gore anime is bad. There are actually ones out there that boast illustrious story arcs. Besides Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin), there’s also Tokyo Ghoul, Mirai Nikki, Elfen Lied, Berserk, and plenty others to choose from.

But if gore anime isn’t your cup of tea, no one can blame you. It all boils down to our own individual tastes, and for some, gore anime just isn’t their go-to show.
