Video games allow you to live the life you’ve never had. May it be a Japanese high school student fighting obscure monsters, a United States Navy Seal, a military commander, or simply a slayer of gargantuan monsters.
Games involving hunting down monsters are a huge hit, and the most notable of game of the genre is the Monster Hunter series, although certain dungeon crawlers and RPGs possess similar elements.
The feeling of seeing an oversized gargantuan monster which can barely fit the screen is both scary and exhilarating, especially if it’s making its way towards you. So, here are some of the notable ones in video games.

The Colossi in the Shadow of the Colossus
If you’ve never owned a Playstation 2 before, then you’ve missed a third of your gaming life. The game “Shadow of Colossus” features some of the largest video game monsters in the gaming world. Released in 2005, it has won numerous awards and is critically acclaimed.
The monsters you get to fight (or kill) in the game are the Colossi, which are large creatures made of stone. Not all of them are that big – the smallest is 11 feet tall – but are still imposing nonetheless. The first colossus is a decent 70 feet, while the largest is at an astonishing 500 feet – and flying at that. Here are some in-game screenshots:

Lao-Shan Lung: Monster Hunter Series
Having the size of a mountain, the Lao-Shan Lung is one of the most formidable monsters in Monster Hunter. It has two varieties: the normal one and the Ashen Lao-Shan Lung, whose carapace has been discolored due to being exposed to volcanic debris. Although docile, it will attack anyone disrupting its feeding.
Jhen Moran: Monster Hunter
Standing at nearly 400 feet, the Jhen Moran is a docile monster, though it will aggressively attack hunting ships. However, this elder dragon rarely takes notice of hunters climbing its back to mine rare ores and other resources. Its main habitat is the desert – and rightfully so as no forest will probably be able to host it.
Raviente: Monster Hunter
Currently the one of the largest monsters in the series (only rivaled by the Dalamadur ), the Raviente’s size makes the Jhen Moran and Lao-Shan Lung look like mere toddlers. Other than being the size of a small island, this monster is able to spit out fireballs and cause miniature fireball eruptions while burrowing in the ground. The experience of fighting this monster is one of the reasons why the PS Vita needs a Monster Hunter game.
Dionea Abductors: Freedom Wars
Set in a futuristic dystopian society, Freedom Wars has gameplay elements comparable to Monster Hunter. It is considered as one of the hottest releases in the Playstation Vita last year. The Dionea class abductors aren’t the largest monsters in the gaming world, but it’s painstakingly difficult to kill, even with your array of guns, spears, rocket launchers and swords. Not only is it made of metal, but it is able to breathe out blasts of plasma and cause a rain of fireballs to scorch the battlefield – and its enemies.
Imagine what would it be like if one of the above mentioned monsters suddenly appeared in the middle of a bustling metropolis. We’re lucky that these only exist in fiction, and you’ve got to hand it to the video game developers, as these games are a joy to play. Remember though, don’t neglect your real life pets and furry monsters if you’re busy killing virtual ones!
